What's the meaning of a Moon moment?

A Moon moment lies at the heart of Beyond the Moon. It’s not a luxury — and it’s more than a holiday. It’s a chance to pause, to breathe, and to invest in wellbeing, resilience, and connection.

During a Moon moment, families with a seriously ill child can simply pause. No hospitals, no schedules, no constant worry — just space to breathe, time together, and a chance to reconnect. What many take for granted often becomes out of reach for these families. Beyond the Moon makes it possible again.

Every week, all year round, we offer one family a fully supported Moon moment — a weekend, midweek, or full week, tailored to the needs of the child and their family. We start from what families truly need, not from what’s available. From transport to accommodation, from practical arrangements to the smallest details — everything is taken care of.

Every “moon moment” is unique, but the feeling is always the same: simply being a family again.

Who is eligible?

As our resources are limited, we prioritise supporting the families who need a Moon moment the most. Each application is therefore carefully reviewed in close consultation with the treating physician and the medical team.

Sick child between 3 and 18 years

The family has not previously received a similar complimentary family stay.

The child is frequently hospitalised and undergoing medical treatment:

The need or request concerns a multi-day stay with a dedicated Beyond the Moon holiday partner.

The illness has a significant emotional and financial impact.

The child is medically fit to travel and has written approval from the treating physician.

All family members are covered by travel and medical insurance.

The journey to a Moon moment

Following medical approval, we design a tailored journey for each family. We start from the family’s needs — not from what’s available.
Privacy and trust are at the heart of everything we do. All information is handled with the utmost confidentiality.

Each moon family follows a carefully guided journey, from application to complete peace of mind. Beyond the Moon takes care of everything from A to Z, allowing families to pause and rediscover time together.

After their stay, families are invited to share a testimonial — always with full respect for their privacy — as a gesture of appreciation towards the partner who made their Moon Moment possible. These authentic, heartfelt stories are essential to sustaining and growing Beyond the Moon, helping us continue to reach more families in need.

“Beyond the Moon gave us something no one can ever take away: time together. Even after saying goodbye to our child, those days remain a source of comfort.”

Frequently asked questions

This varies from family to family. Each application is carefully reviewed in close consultation with healthcare professionals. We only plan the Moon moment once written medical approval has been obtained and everything can be arranged safely and practically.
In most cases, the process takes between approximately four weeks and two months, sometimes longer. In urgent or palliative situations, we make every effort to shorten this timeframe where possible. This depends on factors such as the child’s medical condition and treatments, the availability of our holiday partners, and any additional medical or practical needs.
We always take the necessary time to ensure that each Moon moment is feasible, safe, and truly worry-free.

A Moon moment is entirely cost-free and carefree for the family. Beyond the Moon takes care of everything from A to Z. We only ask for some limited administrative follow-up to organise the stay, and a testimonial after the Moon moment, to share their experience. This feedback is essential to strengthen our work and to show our partners the real impact of their support. These family stories are vital to the continuity and growth of Beyond the Moon. This allows families to focus fully on what truly matters: finding peace and spending meaningful time together.

Each Moon moment is carefully designed in close consultation with the family and the primary care physician. We listen to the needs of the child and the family and look, within our network of trusted holiday partners, for the best possible match. Families are welcome to share their preferences, but we do not start from a free choice of destination.

Because we work with limited resources and want to offer as many families as possible a moment of respite, each family is granted one Moon moment. In this way, we can share our care in a fair and supportive way. Our goal is to offer 52 families a carefree Moon moment each year — one every week. The stronger the support we can build together with our partners, the more families we can give rest and renewed strength. For every family, that one moment becomes a unique light to hold on to and carry forward.
